Spirituality in Contemporary Art Practice
A talk exploring spirituality in contemporary art practice. How ritual, and tradition have informed the making of two artists: Award-winning photographer Manon Ouimet (UK) and Seoul-based artist Mi Park.
The talk delves into the changes one goes through as an artist, as a person and how this has become increasingly central to their thinking and work. Through the talk, which is chaired by Hugh Dichmont, we will have an opportunity to explore the idea of spirituality in its widest sense, and its connection to creativity.
Manon Ouimet is a London-based, award winning photographer. In 2019, she received a distinction for an MA in Photography at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Manon engages with notions of identity and the therapeutic values photography can offer, posing difficult yet essential questions regarding body image and visual representation. Her work advocates understanding and compassion while inspiring self-confidence and positivity with the individuals with whom she collaborates.
Mi Park is a performance artist currently based in Seoul, Korea. They are interested in investigating the site/time - specific nature of identities. This investigation takes from by the artist choreographing rituals and social ruptures with surreal visuals and inserting them into the everyday. Through their work, Park questions race, gender, and social status with performances playing on stand-up comedy, wedding proposals, biker gang relationships and more.
